Laredo Theater Guild International presents Wit, a play by Margaret Edson.
Wit will be performed lived in the Texas A&M International Sam Johnson Experimental Theater January 9th through January 19th. Wit is directed by Casandra Canales and produced by Allie Howland.
Wit, Margaret Edson’s powerfully imagined Pulitzer Prize-winning play, examines what makes life worth living through her exploration of one of existence’s unifying experiences – mortality – while she also probes the vital importance of human relationships. Wit is a poignant and humorous look at life, death, poetry, and compassion.
Vivian Bearing, a brilliant and resolute professor of English Literature and expert on the Holy Sonnets of John Donne, has been diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer. She consents to an experimental chemotherapy treatment that, although not guaranteed to save her, will provide research data for the future of oncology. Professor Bearing braves all eight rounds of chemotherapy, but is told the cancer has continued to worsen and there is nothing else that can be done. Through the agony of dying from a terminal illness, she learns a lesson of compassion; at her darkest hour she is shown mercy from her nurse, Susie Monahan, and her mentor, Professor E.M. Ashford. In a final acceptance of her fate, Professor Bearing institutes a Do Not Resuscitate order, finally succumbing to death, which she has studied so fastidiously in the teaching of Donne’s work.
